"Print or digital, it's all fan art to me..." |
|
I'll admit I was a little bit cautious about the whole "e-zine" thing up until this past year. For those new to all this, that's where science fiction fanzines no longer print up and mail out hardcopy editions, but instead have only an online presence, either in HTML or as a pdf. While it certainly widened their possible readership and, most importantly for self-published projects, it saved the editors a rear-load of money, it just didn't seem "real" to me. But then I found that I now had much wider possibilities to play in color, something that I have done very little of throughout my so-called career. Now I'm having a blast, though I will admit I still like the feel of holding a paper copy in my hand. It's too easy for a website to vanish in a blink, all that material never to be seen again. When printed on paper, you have to work much harder to destroy it. And there are lots of copies all over the place, increasing the possibility of the work lasting far beyond the life time of those who created it. You know, like a little time machine. And what could more science-fictional than that?
So, this page showcases some of the fannish artwork I had published in 2009, both in print and on line, for those 'zines that specifically consider themselves in the sf fanzine category. As per usual, I'm only showing the cover pieces since they are, obviously, going to be the bigger and most impressive. (And are you impressed, yet? If not, I'll have to work even harder in 2010!) Below the pictures is a full listing of all the zines with my artwork for 2009. Where possible, I've added a link you can click that will take you right to the entire fanzine to check out. These days, even folks who are still known mainly for publishing in print will often put up an online version as well, so it's possible to see a lot more of these. (And yes, I know that is the advantage of being online over having only a few print copies. Personally, it's that combination of print and digital that I think is the best way to go!) (And, as I note on every page here, don't forget to check out my main site, where I do the pro artist thingy, at Jabberwocky Graphix. Buy soon, and buy often, so I can continue to support my fannish habit here!) |

Here is the full list of sf zines that published some of my art in 2009, both in print and on-line, with links where I could find them. (And remember, many of these editors are always happy to have new contributors, so don't make me do all of this by myself- send some of your own writing and art to them and join the fun! There's no money to be made here, but if we wanted to be rich, wouldn't we all have real jobs?)
The Official Stuff!
